What is political jujitsu you ask? It is when your opponent is pushing and you are pulling using what should be the opponents momentum into your momentum. From The Hill: President Obama pointedly praised on Monday the healthcare program Republican Mitt Romney installed as governor of Massachusetts. Obama singled out Romney for praise over his state’s healthcare plan, which shares similarities with the president’s national healthcare reform, in a bit of backhanded praise for the likely Republican presidential candidate. “I agree with Mitt Romney, who’s recently said he’s proud of what he accomplished in Massachusetts,” Obama said at a gathering of governors at the White House. Mitt Romney is seen by the White House as someone who could attract some political liberals, independents and northern white soccer moms. He is seen as less scary to the political elite in Washington DC and New York on the east coast and California and Colorado out west after having been the Governor of the deep blue Massachusetts.
President Obama isn’t playing for a narrow victory in his 2012 reelection effort, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tim Kaine promised Saturday. Kaine, speaking to party members in Washington at the DNC’s Winter Meeting, said that the president’s reelection would kick off sometime in the second quarter of 2011. That campaign wouldn’t be looking, though, to eke out just enough electoral votes to put Obama over the top. “We’re going to play for the big win,” Kaine told DNC members, to cheers. “We’re going to play in every corner of this country.” Kaine explained that locating the party’s 2012 convention in Charlotte, N.C. was part of that strategy.
